Application Brief Smart Cards

RMS with RFID readers

Challenge:

  • We were approached by a mutual partner, Blackbaud, who had a customer wanting assistance in a school cafeteria POS project. Agnes Irwin already had a security solution in place and was using I class 13.56 smart cards for attendance and building access. They are using RMS in the bookstore and are rolling out the cafeteria project in September. They had been printing and sticking bar code labels with the student ID on the existing smart cards and scanning them in the bookstore to track and process sales.

Technology Solution

  • Applying additional labels is tedious and costly, besides eventually the labels fall off. Thanks to Bluestar and RFIDeas, OBSOL came up with the perfect solution, encoding the existing cards! After the I class cards are printed, they are flashed using the RFIDeas Air Writer. This step successfully encodes the card with the student ID permanently. Now when the student proceeds to make a purchase in the bookstore or cafeteria all they have to do is pass the card in front of the RFIDeas reader and their account is called up. The reader replaces a conventional bar code scanner, Mag stripe reader or slot reader.

Processing Cafeteria Transactions

  • The student may pay for the semester in advance or just have a prepaid amount on file
  • A file is generated with the student information consisting of the name, student id, account balance and pricing level that had been predetermined.
  • The file is then uploaded to RMS.
  • When the student comes in to make a purchase, the smart card is read by the RFIDeas reader. The student name, id and balance is displayed on the POS screen as well as the photo (if desired)
  • The transaction is then processed and the account is debited.
  • If the student has prepaid for the entire year the amount debited may differ from the amount of someone who has only paid for a month, essentially providing a discount but still tracking sales and providing a balance.
